Democratic Senate hopefuls undeterred by Elizabeth Warren

“We’re in this race for the long haul,” said Chuck Gilboy, a spokesman for Newton Mayor Setti Warren’s cash-strapped campaign. “Absolutely, we believe this will be about having the right candidate go toe-to-toe with Scott Brown on the campaign trail, and we believe that candidate is Setti Warren.”

But to reclaim the coveted seat formerly held by the late Edward M. Kennedy, Democrats can’t afford a drawn-out, primary slugfest, said one political pundit. “Given how much it’ll take to beat Scott Brown, you need a unified party and you want to settle this as soon as you can,” said Boston University political historian Thomas Whalen.

Meanwhile, Setti Warren suffered an embarrassing misstep yesterday on Channel 5’s “On the Record” program, blanking on all five pop-quiz questions about the crisis in Egypt.

“I’m not sure . . . I don’t know,” Setti Warren said repeatedly, shaking his head, at times muttering unintelligibly. Gilboy defended Warren’s foreign policy chops, noting his service as a naval intelligence specialist and yearlong tour of duty in Iraq.

Other defiant candidates also pledged to press on regardless of joins the race.

“It changes nothing,” said Marisa DeFranco, an immigration lawyer from Middleton. “What about the 90 percent of the voters who can’t afford $1,000 a pop for fund-raisers? What about their interests?”

“I’m not going to change my strategy,” said state Rep. Tom Conroy of Wayland, who has campaigned by walking more than 500 miles. “I remain, I believe, the most qualified candidate out there, whether or not she gets in.
