Does Purdue's $4.2 million flip-flop on coal plant prove costly or save millions?

Interviewed for this story, Purdue Trustee Mike Berghoff said the entire project simply needed to be rethought after nearly 10 years of buildup, during which time the costs of coal, natural gas and construction fluctuated and the university underwent a change in top administration, with Purdue President France Córdova replacing Martin Jischke. "It is a fair question of why it to so long," Berghoff said of the decision to cancel the project. "I think the main reason it was slow to coming was the time table of this overall project -- almost a decade. It is not uncommon for costs like that to change. It is kind of like predicting the cost of gasoline. Look how it has cycled over the past three or four years." "It is hugely symbolic. This was the 150th coal project canceled in the U.S. (since 2001)," said Nachy Kanfer, Sierra Club's Midwest organizer. "It was canceled in the face of opposition. And it was also symbolic because Purdue is a place for higher education and of engineering. The cancellation was Purdue saying they were not going to use antiquated technologies." Purdue is among 35 U.S. schools still targeted by the Sierra Club's Campuses Beyond Coal program. Last year the Sierra Club and the Hoosier Environmental Council filed a legal challenge against the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's air permit for the coal boiler. After Purdue canceled its plans for the coal boiler, the groups reached a settlement. Since 2007 more than 60 proposed coal plants have been canceled or put on hold and some universities have pledged to stop using coal. Last year University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced it will end its use of coal in the next decade and the Missouri University of Science and Technology is replacing its coal-fired boilers on campus with a biomass.
