Redefining Personal Computing
A few days after I got the job as Editor-in-Chief of PCMag.com, I met with an executive at a huge interactive agency for drinks. “Congratulations,” she told me brightly, “but you have to change the name of the site—‘PC’ is just awful.” Indeed, in the narrowest sense, the name seems misleading. We cover the whole range of “computerized” products—HDTVS, digital cameras, tablets, cell phones, Macs of every stripe, and so on. And other than our Digital Editions, we no longer publish anything that resembles a magazine. But in the 30 years since IBM launched the original IBM PC, “personal computing” has changed as well; technology permeates every aspect of our social, family, and business lives. If this isn’t the age of personal computing, what would you call it?
A big part of the PC’s identity problem has been Apple. For the better part of its existence, Apple has been drawing a line between its Macintosh computers and the generic PC manufacturers. Although the Mac vs. PC commercials no longer run on TV, they are burned into our collective unconscious. Apple anthropomorphized the PC platform so effectively that as soon as I type “I’m a PC,” your mind creates a mental image of a stodgy, geeky John Hodgeman. It was brilliant marketing, but it essentially obscured the fact that Mac vs. PC is really just a platform war within the broader market of personal computing. Macs are PCs, too.
The IBM PC wasn’t the first personal computer, of course. The Apple II, Atari 800, and Commodore PET all came out in the late ’70s, but they were expensive, proprietary systems. One of the things that made the IBM PC so great was that it used industry standard parts, so there was no mystery to how it worked. With the right documentation you could completely—and legally—build your own from spare parts in your basement. For that matter, Michael Dell could start a Fortune 100 business in his dorm room. It was an open-source hardware revolution before anyone knew what open source was.
